The AMA defines Marketing as follows:

Marketing is an organizational function and a set of processes for creating, communicating and delivering value to customers and for managing customer relationships in ways that benefit the organization and its stakeholders.

My definition is a little shorter but gets at the same ideas:

Marketing facilitates the transfer or sale of goods or services to customers for a profit.

If you have a business you need to think about Marketing. With a high-level understanding of what it is, the tactical implementation will make more sense, and your business will be more successful. Great post.

@ Mark - Most people don't buy the overpriced goods, but enough do. The stations make very little off the gas. One of my vendors used to own a few stations - I quizzed him on the biz last time we had lunch. Interesting stuff.

@ Sonia - I like your definition of marketing, and consequently am not convinced that PR isn't part of it. It's a way that a company communicates with customers and prospects, so shouldn't it be included under the marketing umbrella?

Yeah, QRW, I find a lot of that. "I hate marketing." "Oh, ok, we won't do any of that, then, we'll just work on communication and connection." Tee hee.

Nice points. I think freelancers in particular are weirded out by marketing themselves, when it's really simple - communicating to clients and prospects, and listening (and learning from) the response. Thanks!

I like to study Marketing from the angle of what does that store think I'm thinking. Or even better yet. That gas station owner. Does he really think I'm going to spend $.05 less a gallon for his gas then come in and spend 30 or 40 percent more for milk or bread or beer or whatever.I'm not thinking so.
